Dec 15 , 2011
It’s hard to capture the grandeur of Munich castles in words—the palaces in Germany are simply breathtaking and deserve to be prioritized on your vacation. Here are three of the most dazzling Munich castles that are sure to provide you with a richer understanding of German culture.
Schleissheim Palace
Looking for Munich castles? Look no further than the Schleissheim Palace complex, which includes three palaces: the New Palace, Lustheim Palace, and the Old Palace. The New Palace started to be built in 1700. Highlights of the New Palace include the Large Hall—which has elegant white walls and an awe-inspiring ceiling painting depicting the famous Aeneas—and the Dining Hall, which has portraits of Bavarian political figures. The Lustheim Palace has Italian architecture and houses a museum with thousands of porcelain pieces. The Old Palace dates back to 1598 and has two museums, including a museum of global religious artifacts.
Nymphenburg Palace
The Nymphenburg Palace is simply stunning and should definitely be a priority while you’re visiting Munich. Construction on the Nymphenburg Palace began centuries ago in the 1660’s. The palace, which features beautiful Baroque architecture, operated as a summer estate. While you’re visiting Nymphenburg Palace, make sure to check out the Marstallmuseum, which is a museum of carriages located in the stables, as well as the “Gallery of Beauties,” which, as you might guess, includes several portraits of lovely women.
Munich Residenz
The Munich Residenz is one of the top tourist activities in Munich. The Munich Residenz includes the Neuveste, a castle built in fourteenth century during the rule of Duke Stephan III. The Neuveste is one of the best Munich castles, and the Munich Residenz also has a museum with historic artifacts, such as the ornate “Longcase clock” of the early eighteenth century. As you tour the rooms that once housed and hosted German rulers, including the opulent Curvilliés Theatre, you’ll get a great look into German culture. At the Munich Residenz, the Treasury exhibits royal jewelry.
