Munich is a true representation of German and Bavarian culture. Things to do in Munich include amazing tours, historical sights and great enjoyment. Whether it’s sports and beer or music and arts, everyone will find something that they love in this cultural center of Germany.
1. Beergardens
Beergardens are one of the things Germany is most famous for combined with the local Bavarian way of celebration! Beergardens are open-air areas, much like picnic areas, where they serve beer. You will have an amazing experience tasting local beer, but don’t forget to bring your own food!
2. Marienplatz
Marienplatz is Munich’s center of architecture. Here you find many interesting constructions -- some of which are 900 years old. The most interesting building to be found here is the New City Hall, constructed in the late 19th century. A glockenspiel takes place daily on top of the building.
3. BMW Welt
Munich is the birth place of the world famous car BMW. Things to do include a visit to the BMW museum, a tour through the plant and a visit to the recycling center. Visiting this center can be done anytime, but should you wish for a tour through the facility, book in advance.
4. Tierpark Hellabrunn
Better known as Zoo Hellabrunn, this thing to do in Munich offers you a wonderful daytrip. The zoo is famous for its elephants and should you be traveling with children, this place must not be missed.
5. Englischer Garten
This park is a so called military garden built in 18th century Munich. Its historical significance is reflected in its many sights. One of them is the Chinese Tower, which also houses a Beergarden. Another is the Monopterous, a Greek Style temple designed in the early 1800’s.
6. Oktoberfest
An annual celebration held every year in October, when beer-lovers from all over the world flock to Munich’s Beergardens. They wear traditional lederhosen and every day is dedicated to, you guessed right, beer! Book in advance, because hotels get crowded during this period.
7. Neuschwanstein
Take a daytrip from Munich to this wonderful castle. The idea of the castle came from King Ludwig II, king of Bavaria in 1864. He wanted a modern castle built in the style of old German knights. Now, it’s one of the most popular castles in the world.
8. Christmas Markets
If there is anything Germany is famous for, it’s Christmas markets! Things to do in Munich during Christmas include great shopping opportunities, as well as Bratwurst, beer and Gluhwein. The latter is better known as Mulled Wine and typically served warm.
9. Peterskirche (St. Peter’s Church)
The history of this church goes back to the 8th century, before the founding of Munich. The church was built in dedication to the monks who lived in a church on a hill called Petersbergl. The St. Peter’s Church was built on what is believed to be this same hill.
10. Allianz Arena
If you are a fan of football, you have without doubt heard of FC Bayern Munich. The Allianz Area is their home ground. Try to get tickets to one of their matches or take some great photographs of this great piece of modernity amidst Munich’s historical culture.
