Dec 15 , 2011
Relax under the cooling shade of the trees, sip on your mug of delicious Bavarian beer, and enjoy a traditional bite from the food stands. Discover the top 5 best beer gardens in Munich, the undisputed beer capital of the world, where you can enjoy beer as it was meant to be.
1. Beer Garden at the Chinese Tower (Chinesischer Turm)
This beer garden is located in the English Garden, Munich’s largest park area, right at the base of the park’s signature landmark – a 200 year-old, 5-story, pagoda-style tower. This is one of the most popular beer gardens in Munich, and on sunny days in summer, it can be overflowing with guests, which definitely creates a fun atmosphere that’s irresistible! Guests can also enjoy a lovely horse drawn carriage ride through the park before or after downing a liter of Hofbräu, because the rides start directly at the entrance of the beer garden. It seats up to 7,000 people, which makes it the second largest beer garden in the city, and with the traditional brass band that plays to the large crowds, it creates a type of Oktoberfest atmosphere all year round. Prost!
2. Beer Garden Hischgarten
This beer garden “Königlicher Hirchgarten,” meaning “Royal Deer Garden,” is the largest in Munich (with up to 8,000 seats!), and is where the city’s inhabitants go to enjoy dining and socializing, and of course, incredible beer. Large public viewing screens are set up to broadcast major football tournaments, making this an entertaining and lively place to spend a warm, pleasant evening or weekend. Lush meadows of the surrounding park offer a gorgeous setting of greenery, and as the name indicates, there are actually deer roaming around – now that’s worth seeing!
3. Beer Garden at Viktualienmarkt
You’ll find Munich’s most centrally located beer garden in the heart of the city’s oldest farmers market, the Viktualienmarkt. Because it is around the corner from Marienplatz (the central square in Munich and a popular tourist attraction), this beer garden is the perfect place to take a break, have a beer, enjoy delicacies from the market, and take in the bustling market scene. Every six weeks, a different beer from one of Munich’s famous breweries is served from the tap, which sets this charming little beer garden apart from all the others.
4. Beer Garden Augustiner Keller
Opened in 1812, this is the oldest beer garden in Munich, where the beer is served straight out of wooden barrels – old-school style – and the strike of a bell announces the opening of each new barrel. The Augustiner exterior has not changed since 1895, making this one of the most beautiful beer gardens in Munich, and one of the most traditional. From the food, to the canopy of chestnut trees, to the authentic way the Edelstoff beer is served, you can’t get more of an authentic Biergärten experience than you can here.
5. Beer Garden Aumeister (Zum Aumeister)
Do you enjoy seasonal, craft brewed beer? Then the Aumeister beer garden is the place for you! Beer lovers can enjoy different beers during different seasons, from Sommerbier and Hofbrau during the summer, to Wiesnbier during Oktoberfest. The family friendly Aumeister is located in the English Garden, Munich’s largest and most popular park. Here you can enjoy the best beers the city has to offer under old chestnut trees and with high quality Bavarian and Mediterranean meals and snacks from the food stalls.
After a day of beer, head out for a night of dancing at the best clubs in Munich.
